What He Did(Early)

 WHO HE WAS

John Knox was a protestant reformer. He was the leader of  theScottish Reformation. He was most famous for his preaching around Scotland. He is said to be the father of the prespyrtian church. He lived from 1513-1572.

Early Life 

          Little is known of his early life but it is said he was born in Haddington which is east of Edinburgh, Scotland in 1513. His father was William Knox who was a modest tradesman. His brother was also named William Knox and he was a merchant at Prestonpans and he traded goods between England and Scotland. During his youth people were angry atCatholic churches whoowned more than half the estate in Scotland. Historians say he most likely attended St. Andrews University in 1529 and studied Theology. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1536.

       John Knox was greatly influenced by church father's such as John Calvin, Augustine, John Chrysotom, and Athanasius.  He first started out as a tutor to the sons of two influential Protestant nobleman.In the early 1540's he became a follower of a Protestant reformer named George Wishart who spoke all through out Scotland. For a while he served as a body gaurd to George Wishart. In 1546 Wishart was aressted and burned at the stake on a charge of heresy by Cardinal Beaton. In response some of Wishart's followers(not including John Knox) stormed in to Beaton's house and threw him outside his bedroom window with a rope around his neck.

        In 1547 he became the spokesman for the Reformation and the foremost leader of it.His oposition to the Catholic church and it's rituals made him a controversial figure then. Under him the Church of Scotland adopted a decleration of faith,form of government, anew moral tone and a liturgy. He supervised the preperation of the constitution and liturgy of the Reformed Church. He even shaped the democratic form of government Scotland Adopted. John Knox's strong personality and fiery preaching made him one of the most powerful Scots of his day.
